Player protection and limits explained

Player protection and limits – Player protection covers the statutory and voluntary tools bettors can use to limit their gambling – from deposit limits to self-exclusion.

Sports betting is gambling. For most people it remains entertainment; for some it becomes a problem. That is why Germany has statutory player protection rules, and every licensed bookmaker there must provide tools that let you set your own limits.

Statutory rules in Germany

In Germany, since the 2021 State Treaty on Gambling (Glücksspielstaatsvertrag), the following applies to bookmakers holding a German licence, among other things:

  • Deposit limit: When registering, everyone sets a monthly deposit limit. Across all bookmakers, the cap is in principle €1,000 per month; this is monitored via a central database.
  • OASIS exclusion system: Anyone who is excluded can no longer bet with any licensed bookmaker in Germany. You can apply for an exclusion yourself; it lasts at least three months.
  • Age limit: Betting is only permitted from the age of 18, and identity is verified.
  • Restrictions on in-play betting, so that bets are not placed every few seconds.

Setting your own limits

Beyond the law, bookmakers usually offer further tools: stake limits per day or week, loss limits, reminders of how long you have been playing and a short "cooling-off" break. It makes sense to set such limits before you play, not only after a bad evening. A fixed betting budget, as in bankroll management, is the simplest limit.

Warning signs

Problem gambling often begins gradually. Typical signs are:

  • Stakes are increased to win back losses.
  • Money needed for other things is used for betting.
  • Bets are hidden from family or friends.
  • Your thoughts constantly revolve around the next bet.
  • Limits you have set are repeatedly raised or circumvented.

If you recognise yourself in this, take it seriously. Getting help is not a sign of weakness.

Where to find help

  • gamblingtherapy.org – free, confidential international online support and advice for people outside Germany.
  • check-dein-spiel.de – self-test, information and anonymous online counselling; a public service in Germany for preventing gambling addiction (in German).
  • German gambling addiction helpline: 0800 1 37 27 00 – free and anonymous (in Germany).
  • Local addiction counselling services offer face-to-face support, including for family members.

In Germany, a player exclusion via OASIS can be requested directly from the bookmaker or from the competent authority.
