How a system bet works

A system bet is a bundle of several accumulators. With “2 from 3” you pick three selections and the bookmaker forms every possible double from them. Each of these lines is a separate bet with its own stake. If one selection fails, only the lines containing it are lost; the others can still win.

Worked example: 2 from 3 at €1 per line

LineOddsPayout
Tip 1 + 21.50 × 2.00 = 3.00€3.00
Tip 1 + 31.50 × 2.50 = 3.75€3.75
Tip 2 + 32.00 × 2.50 = 5.00€5.00
All correct€11.75

The system costs €3. If all three selections win, €11.75 comes back, €8.75 net profit. If selection 1 loses, only line 2 + 3 remains with €5.00, still €2 up. If selection 3 loses instead, the remaining line 1 + 2 only returns €3.00 and you are exactly break-even. This is exactly the calculation the calculator does for you, even while the matches are in play.

The common systems

SystemStructure
2 from 33 lines
2 from 46 lines
3 from 44 lines
2 from 510 lines
3 from 510 lines
4 from 55 lines
Trixie3 selections, doubles + treble, 4 lines
Patent3 selections, singles to treble, 7 lines
Yankee4 selections, doubles to four-fold, 11 lines
Lucky 154 selections, singles to four-fold, 15 lines
Canadian5 selections, doubles to five-fold, 26 lines
Lucky 315 selections, singles to five-fold, 31 lines
Heinz6 selections, doubles to six-fold, 57 lines
Super Heinz7 selections, doubles to seven-fold, 120 lines
Goliath8 selections, doubles to eight-fold, 247 lines

The number of lines grows quickly. “k from n” has as many lines as there are ways to choose k selections from n. Full cover systems such as Yankee or Goliath combine all bet sizes from doubles upwards, and the “Lucky” variants also include every single. At €1 per line, a Goliath already costs €247.

Is a system worth it?

Systems are insurance, not a discount. Every line contains the multiplied margin of its selections, and you are buying many lines at once. A system makes most sense with several selections at higher odds where you expect one to slip up. With odds all around 1.30, the extra stake usually eats up the profit.

Betting tax

Whether and how sports betting is taxed depends on the country and the bookmaker. Some bookmakers already price a tax into the odds, so you get slightly lower odds and no other deduction. Others deduct a share from the payout if you win or take it directly from the stake. Check your bookmaker’s terms before you calculate.

FAQ

How many lines does a 2 from 3 system bet have?

Three. Exactly three doubles can be formed from three selections: A+B, A+C and B+C. At €1 per line the system costs €3. In general, the number of lines is the binomial coefficient “n choose k”, so 10 lines for 3 from 5.

What is the difference between a Trixie, Patent and Yankee?

All three are full cover systems. A Trixie has 3 selections with all doubles plus the treble (4 lines). A Patent adds the 3 singles (7 lines). A Yankee has 4 selections with all doubles, trebles and the four-fold, 11 lines in total.

When does a system bet win?

As soon as at least one line is completely correct. With 2 from 3, two winners are enough. Whether that makes a profit depends on the odds: two winners at low odds can pay out less than the whole system cost.

Stake per line or total stake – what is the difference?

Most bookmakers ask for the stake per line; the total stake is then lines × stake. If you set a total stake, it is split evenly across all lines. In the calculator you can switch between the two.

Is a system bet better than an accumulator?

It is safer, but not cheaper. You pay for several lines, and every line contains the multiplied margin. In return, a system forgives one or more losing selections. With many high odds that is a real advantage; with low odds the higher stake often eats up the profit.

How is betting tax calculated on system bets?

Depending on the bookmaker, on the total stake or as a deduction from the winnings. With the switch in the calculator, 5% is deducted from the payout.
